What is Forensic Linguistics – and why does it matter?
Forensic linguistics is the application of linguistic expertise to legal and investigative contexts. It explores how language influences evidence, decision-making and, ultimately, routes to justice.
Forensic linguists analyse spoken and written communication—from emergency calls, witness statements and police records to interview transcripts, legal documents, and institutional reports and practices. We can show, for example, where (and how) language may create misunderstanding, bias, or barriers to justice.
The 'toolkit' forensic linguists use also informs work across healthcare, safeguarding, charities, government, and other organisations where communication has significant consequences.
